Problem: Using Google Chrome 51 returns a blank screen when logging in to Portal for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Online, and custom apps fail to load

Description

Warning:
Do not use the Help > About Google Chrome window to manually check to see if you have Chrome version 51 installed.
If you are at an earlier release, the act of checking this triggers an update to Chrome 51.
To check your version, type the following into the address bar: chrome://version/

Google has released an update to their Google Chrome browser – version 51, which was released on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Users attempting to log in using Google Chrome v51 to either ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS 10.3, 10.3.1, 10.4, or 10.4.1 encounter a blank screen. This issue also impacts  a subset of custom apps built with the ArcGIS API for JavaScript v3.8 through 3.16, as these apps may fail to load. For example, apps that use the feature table or analysis widgets.

Among the apps that are still affected are the ArcGIS API for JavaScript Web Optimizer, the ArcGIS Online Web Scene Viewer, Esri Maps for SharePoint, and the ArcGIS GeoEvent 10.3-10.4.1 Extension for Server.

Solution or Workaround

What you can do:

If you are using Google Chrome to access ArcGIS Online, the affected releases of Portal for ArcGIS, or apps built with the affected releases of ArcGIS API for JavaScript, please turn off auto-update in your Chrome browser now. If Chrome has already updated, please use another browser temporarily, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer, until the patches for this issue have been completed.

What Esri is doing:

Esri has already prepared fixes for the following apps:

  • ArcGIS Marketplace
  • ArcGIS Online Activity Dashboard
  • Home App
  • Presentation App
  • Esri Business Analyst
  • Esri Community Analyst

We are working on patches for the ArcGIS API for JavaScript Optimizer, Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS, and the ArcGIS Online Web Scene Viewer.
We are also currently working on a solution for Portal for ArcGIS. Developers using the affected versions of the JavaScript APIs hosted by Esri are unaffected, as it has already been updated. We are working on a solution for the JavaScript API for developers who use either a custom build of the API or use it locally.

We will use this KB article to communicate updates regarding Portal for ArcGIS and the ArcGIS API for JavaScript as soon as we have more information.
