2018 Desktop Training Schedule (Module 1 & 2 – Basic GIS & Spatial Analysis Class) & Info on New Module 3 Class

The eGIS Team will be conducting ArcGIS Desktop (Module 1 & 2 – basic GIS and spatial analysis) trainings throughout 2018 on the following dates:

  • Monday, February 5th
  • Monday, May 7th
  • Thursday, July 26th

All classes will be held at DPW in Alhambra, and go from 9am – 4pm. Enrollment is first-come, first-serve, however, you can only enroll yourself for one training date at a time. If for some reason you cannot attend the date you signed up for, you can always request to move yourself to another future training date. Please email Tia Morita if you are interested, and remember to specify which training date you wish to attend. More info will be sent related to the course as we get closer to the training date.

Attached is a summary of what is covered in each Module.

Before signing up for this training, please note that there are prerequisites to attend:

  • Has at least 4 consecutive months of working with ArcMap in the last year, OR
  • Has created at least 8 full map products in ArcMap prior to class (completed products with all map elements: title, legend, scale bar, etc.), OR
  • Has taken an ESRI ArcGIS Desktop course before, OR
  • If no prior experience using ArcGIS software, attendees must take the Getting Started with GIS (4 hours, free training) prior to attending our training

The reasons for the prerequisites are many:

  1. ArcGIS desktop software is very nuanced and requires some time to become proficient using even the most basic tools – this course assumes attendees know how to use these basic tools and make a basic map
  2. This course covers a lot of ground in one day and attendees who are not familiar with the software often cannot keep up as we progress throughout the day (and it makes us sad to see frustrated students)
  3. Module 2 is the more fun, technical and analytical part of the training, thus to be able to take anything away from it one must have some familiarity with the software

Please respect these prerequisites before sending attendees or signing up.

**Regarding Advanced GIS Classes: we are currently developing a Module 3 class that will focus on GIS data editing, creation and management. This class will be offered only to those who have taken the Module 1&2 course or who more than a year of consistent GIS and ESRI ArcGIS Desktop software experience. Announcements and info on training dates for the new Module 3 course will go out in February – so keep a look out!
