Defining the Boundaries of Practice Between Surveyors and GIS Professionals

This URISA white paper discusses the “boundary” of professional practice between surveyors and GIS professionals with “background and recommendations.”

It’s well worth the read and probably applies to boundary data you create or maintain whether you realize it or not (i.e. not just property boundaries, think SPAs, Zoning, Fire Station Boundaries, Election Precincts, etc.). Tip, read the entire paper before trying to interpret a sentence or paragraph as it will likely be answered as you continue reading. Don’t know how authoritative this work is, but very interesting.

Here’s another good quote (on page 3), “Similarly, one can make maps or plans that are derived from the original measurements or survey products created by others, and not be classified as “practicing survey.”

This post is greatly appreciated. One sentence on Page 4 summarizes the issues best: “It is necessary that GIS professionals, as well as surveyors, keep aware of their state’s licensing laws, and that they engage in constructive dialog if problems arise.”
