eGIS Notice: LACOUNTY Geodatabase Migration

Dear eGIS Members,

As mentioned at prior User Council and Data Committee Meetings the LACOUNTY geodatabase is being migrated from eGISDBP1 to eGISDBP2 where departments will receive individual geodatabases. All data layers previously owned by departments in LACOUNTY will be migrated to these individual departmental databases.

Benefit:

As a result of the migration each department will now have 10 GB of storage available. Individual department geodatabases will decrease the load on the repository and will resolve any performance issues that may have resulted due to the large number of users and data layers in the LACOUNTY GDB. Departments will be able to manage, rebuild indexes, and make schema changes. eGIS will support departments in the migration process, but ultimately each department will be responsible for managing the data within their departmental geodatabase.

Migration Timeline:

What’s Next?

The eGIS team will contact each department within the next few days with information on how to connect to their departmental geodatabase,  as well as instructions on the migration, data clean up, and managing web services. If your department does not receive a follow up email, that is either due to the fact that your department has no data in LACOUNTY and/or web services coming from LACOUNTY.

All GIS Managers/Coordinators: Please be aware that by Wednesday June 26th all departments are required to have successfully established their connection to their new geodatabase. All departments WRITE access to LACOUNTY.GDB will be disabled on this date. Please contact the eGIS team if you have any further questions.

FAQ

Q: Does this migration affect my department?

A: If your department has data published in the LACOUNTY geodatabase then this migration will affect your department.

Q: What should my department do as first steps?

A: In June, your department will receive information on how to connect to the new departmental geodatabase, you will then test the connections and verify that all of your department’s data layers have successfully migrated.

Q: If my department currently utilizes layers from another department in the LACOUNTY geodatabase, how will we be able to connect post the migration?

A: Please contact eGIS requesting permissions to read another departments geodatabase. The eGIS team will help assign the correct permissions and allowing you to connect and access the data layers. No access will be granted without  departmental geodatabase owner approval.

Q: Are there any restrictions on the type of data that can be stored within our departmental geodatabase?

A: Departmental geodatabases are only for non-sensitive, non-HIPAA-compliant data. Any data that can be shared department-wide may be added to this geodatabase.
