eGIS Notice: eGIS Committees, Training Schedule, and Other Resources

Welcome to 2022 from the eGIS Team,

2022 is projected to be a momentous year for Los Angeles County GIS. Several countywide, high-visibility projects are anticipated that rely heavily on geospatial infrastructure provided by the Enterprise GIS (eGIS) Team housed within the Internal Services Department. For the eGIS team, 2021 brought new and highly capable staff, implementation of agile-based practices to support work planning and tracking, ever-increasing demands for geospatial solutions, and a renewed commitment to excellence and accountability.  2022 will build on last year’s momentum with a new calendar of training and learning activities.

EGIS Training and Events Calendar:

EGIS Training and Events Calendar:

NOTE: The eGIS training Calendar will be assessed mid-year (end of June), and may be revised if necessary for program success. Success = Target audience is attending & training is beneficial to member Departments

Definitions:

eGIS Steering Committee – the EGIS Steering Committee will provide a venue for county department managers to work together in administration of the County of Los Angeles Enterprise GIS and all requirements associated with it.

.GIS User Council – the GIS User Council will provide a venue for county staff to discuss GIS projects, best practices, and developments to work together in facilitating the County of Los Angeles geospatial agenda and all requirements associated with it. These sessions are open to any GIS users or individuals interested in GIS technology.

Data Committee/AGOL Governance – The GIS Data Committee & ArcGIS Online (AGOL) Governance groups will provide a venue for county staff to discuss technical GIS data-related issues and hosting of geospatial datasets for best performance. These meetings will co-hosted monthly.

Brown Bag Session – eGIS will host informal Brown Bag Session during lunch time to assist GIS practitioners with technical or cartographic skills. This session is open to all.

eGIS Showcase – Targeted for specific Department Division Managers with similar workflows, the eGIS showcases will highlight opportunities to expand use of GIS for departments with limited GIS staffing. These are independent “department-specific” showcases. If you are interested in hosting or feel like your department can gain value from an administrator-level view of GIS, please contact egis@isd.lacounty.gov to assist with the organization of the eGIS Showcase.

Vendors Workshops – eGIS retains services from various software vendors. To ensure eGIS Member departments utilize and understand the use of the vendor software services, eGIS will host targeted Vendor workshops, with technical & hands-on lessons on topics specific to that vendor. Example vendors showcases include Esri, Geocortex, Eagleview, or 1Spatial. Example topics for vendor showcases would be “Esri ArcGIS Hub Sites: Designing for Accessibility” to ensure compliance with US Access Board (Section 508) & Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

eGIS Training – eGIS-developed, custom content targeted at departments with new-to-the-County GIS Staff. EGIS in the last half of the year will be deploying training material specific to our County’s GIS infrastructure, including eGIS repository connections and eGIS Server Infrastructure.

Esri Training – eGIS, as part of the enterprise investment into Esri Technology, are encouraging and facilitating access to Esri’s eLearning. In the Esri eLearning environment, managers or authorized staff can assign courses or Learning Plans to staff for professional or project-based training on geospatial technology.

Special Note: eGIS Training

Over the years the eGIS team developed and taught a number of introductory GIS courses to its customer county departments including trainings relating to ArcMap.

To better meet the needs of our customer departments, and to support our growing GIS infrastructure in the county, the eGIS team has allocated these resources to design training material specific to our County’s GIS infrastructure.

eGIS is leaning on the resources provided by the County’s investment in Esri services to provide the introductory and advanced geospatial topics and tools, through Esri’s Academy and E-Learning programs. Please visit http://hub.gis.lacounty.gov/resources/training/ for more information and links.
